Cowboy boots are the surprising new trend of the summer
It’s safe to say that recent womenswear shows have promoted cowboy boots – they’ve been spotted at Celine, Saint Laurent, and Isabel Marant. But the truth is, since these last two houses have Western credentials from the 80s deeply embedded in their house codes, we suspect that the recent shoe renaissance is indeed coming from below.
When we say “below” what we really mean is Instagram and the style set is flowing: There have been many cowboy boot moments in 2021. Kendall Jenner wore a classic pair with a Rodarte tea dress in April, and was then pictured pairing them with black briefs a month later in New York City. Camille Charriere showed hers with nothing but panties, while Dua Lipa went for denim cuts and Kourtney Kardashian for a triangle bikini. So if you were wondering why we write about the boots in the middle of a heat wave, now you know why: these shoes are about as trans-seasonal as they get.
The closer they are to the OG, the more versatile they are. So while Daniel Lee’s more punk, more punk approach was on everyone’s wishlist last year, what we covet now is something more authentic. Think embroidered leather, pointed toes, v-cuffs, angled vamps, and a stacked heel – the full shebang.
How to wear cowboy boots now
Once you look past Coachella’s dated and slightly appropriate tropes, you can appreciate cowboy boots for the true summer style they are. But if you don’t plan on wearing a pair of Daisy Dukes or attending post-containment festivals, how can you wear a pair on a daily basis?
The key is to avoid anything that is too costumed. Take inspiration from Isabel Marant, who kicks off different – but not too different – iterations each season, slipping pleated pants and balloon jeans through knee-length and thigh-high uppers for fall / winter and then changing ankle length with rara skirts and cotton boho dresses in spring. Or, try swapping out your summer sandals for a pair – they’ll add just the right amount of attitude to wavy prairie maxi, kitsch floral midday, or anything cut on the bias.
Cowboy boots also translate after sunset. Anthony Vaccarello’s penchant for weaving western touches into his high-octane 80s-inspired evening wear means the two references are now synonymous; so go for black boots and you can wear yours with everything from mini skirts and 20 denier tights to sequins. And once the party is over? Step out of the service with a Princess Diana-inspired tuck; Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner are known to do this with joggers. And that’s about as much in 2021 as it gets.
