Amazon hires 75,000 workers with $ 1,000 signing bonuses

Amazon said Thursday that recruitment is underway for more than 75,000 positions in the company’s distribution and logistics network in the United States and Canada.
The jobs offer an average starting salary of over $ 17 an hour, along with signing bonuses of up to $ 1,000, the company said. Additionally, new employees who can show proof of COVID-19 vaccination will receive an additional $ 100 bonus.
Amazon employees receive a number of benefits in a package that includes paid parental leave and tuition credits, in addition to medical, dental and retirement correspondence.
The move is likely to add further pressure in an already tight labor market forcing workers to quit customer-facing jobs in retail and restaurant business for better-paying jobs elsewhere.
Miami chief Phil Bryant singled out Amazon for pushing many of his colleagues to reconsider their options, telling the Washington Post: “If I can make $ 17 an hour in an Amazon warehouse, but only $ 14 an hour hour as a line cook, notoriously hot, stressful and intense job, why would I do that? “
Glassdoor data shows restaurant waiters searched the “Amazon” job board seven times more frequently last spring than they did before the pandemic, and searches for warehouse jobs tripled .
Meanwhile, Chipotle raised salaries for its workforce this week and outlined an accelerated promotion path for crew members to earn an average salary of $ 100,000 as restaurant managers.
Amazon says its locations with the most open roles are based in Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Washington, and Wisconsin.
