Whether it’s horseback riding or line dancing, there’s a style of cowboy boot to suit your needs. When choosing the right pair of boots, one of the most important things to consider is the style of the heel.

The most common types of cowboy boot heels are fowler, roper, walking, cowboy, riding, and fashion. Each of these styles is designed to perform a different function to suit your needs.

In addition to heel styles, there are also different heel heights. Each height is ideal for different activities. Here are the four standard cowboy heel heights that can be found out of the six standard heel styles:

  • Low heel: Usually around 1 ½ inches tall, ideal for working, walking and riding.
  • Standard heel: Typically 1-1 ½ inches or less with flat bottoms, ideal for everyday use, walking, riding and working on a ranch.
  • High heels: Typically two inches or more with wide, flat bottoms, ideal for everyday wear, work, and riding (as long as they’re not too tall).
  • Pointed heel: Usually three to four inches tall with a narrow base, great for fashion, but not practical for work or riding.

Here are the six common types of cowboy boot heels.

Fowler heels (straight and oblique)

The Fowler heel is a style commonly used for work or riding that is typically 1 ⅛ inches high. There are two variations of Fowler: straight and oblique.

The straight Fowler heel is cut straight, providing more stability. It is an ideal option for work, riding or walking.

The Angled Fowler is angled slightly to give it a more formal and upscale look. It’s a great option for riding or everyday wear.

Roper heels (straight and oblique)

The rope heel is a traditional style of short, flat cowboy heel, making it ideal for riding. This style was developed in the 1920s for cowboys on the rodeo circuit competing in roping competitions.

The heel of the roper measures one inch and is usually straight and flat. However, some versions may have a slight tilt.

The heel of the roper is shorter to provide more stability. This makes it easier for cowboys when jumping off their horses to run towards a calf after tying it up. It is not only comfortable for riding, but it is also comfortable for walking.

When it comes to walking, you want shoes that are comfortable and supportive. Walking heels sometimes have a slight inclination but are overall even to provide stability, support, balance and comfort.

Walking heels are standard height, often standing 1 ⅜ inches high. They are one of the most popular styles of heels because they are practical and functional. They have a wide, flat base, which is why they’re so good for walking.

Cowboy heels are the most traditional style and offer a classic western look. They feature a narrow, sloping heel that is usually 1 ½ inches in height.

The look of the cowboy heel is fashionable, but it’s also functional. It’s a great option for everyday use and it’s even a practical option for horseback riding. This old style has remained a popular trend in footwear.

Riding heels

The riding heel is two inches high and has a noticeable drop. It was originally developed to provide a better fit in the stirrups of western saddles.

The design was created to prevent the rider’s foot from slipping in the stirrup while providing stability. Additionally, the narrower heel design was created so that it does not rub against a horse’s side.

They are comfortable and practical, keeping your feet secure while you ride. Their unique design provides balance and prevents your foot from getting caught in the stirrup.

As the name suggests, fashion heels place style above all else. They are tall, narrow and angled to provide a chic look.

Fashion heels are also commonly referred to as spike heels because they are often three to four inches long. Their large size makes them a bold piece for your outfit. Usually the heel is rubber which gives them bounce and a softer step.

Trendy heels are a great option for a night out on the town, dancing, and formal occasions. However, they are not a good choice for walking, riding or working.
